Don't you love looking into other peoples' homes to see how they live? Of course you do, or you wouldn't be here. You'll hear me say it a million times. Our house is small. We have five humans (three adult-size and two fun-size) crammed into 1644 square feet. But,
I love our small house. We have great neighbors, privacy, and a mortgage that doesn't force us to eat fried Spam three days a week. I'm having flash backs to my childhood. I forgive you, Mom.
In my dream home, I would have a laundry room like this.
Meredith Heron Design via Houzz |
Dream on, sister. In reality, our laundry room is 9.5' x 3' wide.
Since the room is small, I have to utilize every square inch possible for storage. This means taking advantage of vertical space. I bet you're trying to read what is on the chalkboard labels. I would be, too. Stop squinting and let me tell you what they say.
The top row: cake pans and party supplies (these aren't utilized nearly as much as I'd like them to be). Middle row: light bulbs, air fresheners and lonely socks. Bottom row: play dough/paint, miscellaneous stuff , cleaning rags, and tape & twine. In the galvanized bins are dryer sheets, pet food, and trash bags. I got the idea for the hanging bins from this pin that links back to Beneath My Heart. (**Edit on 10-4-12: As soon as I get the correct link for the original inspiration, I'll post it here.) Here is the link for the chalkboard labels that I made for the baskets.
A few people have wanted to know how the metal bins are hung on the wall. I used a regular drill bit to make the holes for the screws.
A few people have wanted to know how the metal bins are hung on the wall. I used a regular drill bit to make the holes for the screws.
On the left side of the laundry room, I keep all of my paint hidden behind a curtain on a tension rod. Here she is, curtainless. I hoard paint, I do confess.
I seriously think I pulled a muscle trying to get pictures of the room. Behind the curtain on the right side of the room, we store the laundry supplies, the crock pot, the pressure cooker, and more (rarely used) party supplies.
Want to see behind that curtain? Never mind. It is a mess. I have to leave something to the imagination. Here's a closer look, instead. I covered the laundry bin and the floral bin with fabric. If you want me to do a tutorial on how to do a fabric-covered galvanized bin, email me or leave a comment. They make great gift baskets!
My favorite thing in here is the idea/bulletin board that I made. It was inspired by the one that Ballard Designs sells for $149.00. It's just a salvaged frame with cork board tiles glued to a piece of plywood. With three boys and a husband who is a landscaper, I spend a lot of time in here. It's nice to have something pretty to look at and it hides the fuse box.
Otherwise, the fuse box would be staring you in the face! Blue and green together make me smile! :)
I hope you enjoyed peeking inside our laundry room and that you were able to gather some inspiration for your laundry room! While you're here, leave a comment and tell me how you've organized a small space. I love to get new ideas!
Oh, by the way, we have lived here since 1998, so the changes we've made in here have been done a little bit at a time. I couldn't have done all of this in week or even in a month, believe me!

Love your great laundry space! You did a fantastic job organizing such a small space. Everything is neat and tidy and has its specific place. Thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Amy! I'm following your blog now. I love that you are flipping houses. It's something that I'd like to do if I had the time and money.
DeleteLooks great! That curtain is a perfect hiding place for all the paint.
ReplyDeleteSmile, Nancy
Looks like a great use of space! I love all the labels!
ReplyDeleteThanks,Shawna!I'm planning on doing a tutorial on how to make the labels soon.
DeleteThat is a beautiful laundry room. I love the curtain to hide the stuff on the shelves. That first laundry room is amazing, but I think yours is a lot more friendly!
ReplyDeleteThanks! A girl can still dream of one day folding clothes without hitting her elbows on the walls. Lol! But I do love my space! Thanks for stopping by!
DeleteWOW!! Love this! I like your room better than your "dream room." I'm going to use your curtain trip for my shelving above my washer/dryer. Great job!!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I love it when I can give someone some inspiration to use their own home. Glad you stopped by!
DeleteAs I expected, I LOVE it! I especially like that you used three different styles of baskets but all the same color. Gives it a lot more interest but is very cohesive. The metal bins on the walls are adorable! How did you attach them?
ReplyDeleteI think I might be able to stay on top of my laundry if my laundry room was this pretty because I'd be spending a lot of time in there!
Glad you like it! I got lucky with the baskets! I'm going to add a picture above so you can see how the metal bins are hung. I used a drill bit to get the holes in the bin. And then they are screwed into plastic wall anchors.
DeleteFound your blog from Remodelaholic linky party and your laundry space is very nice! I'm a new follower and would love to have you come over and link up at Sunday Blog Love this weekend. Wishing you a wonderful weekend and fun as you enter into bloggy world!

ReplyDeleteI don't know if you have an older home or what... but years ago... LIKE forever ago...the first little house we rented had a laundry room like this. I would of loved to done laundry in that room-- IF. IT. LOOKED. LIKE. YOURS.~~~ So pretty.
Heck...I'd love it if my current laundry room looked this sweet.
...good job,Pat (via, FJI)
I'm glad you like it, Pat! Our house was built in 1985, but I'm trying my hardest to make it look like a 1920's cottage. We're slowly getting there!
DeleteOk, you've inspired me. everyone I know has a large redecorated laundry room and mine is small like yours and you did a gorgeous fab job. K, now I have work to do. Hugs!!
ReplyDeleteJen @ www.beachmonkeys.net
Thanks, Jen! I know, I'm so jealous of all the people who have these huge laundry rooms, mud rooms, and walk in closets! But I'm working on making due with what God has blessed us with. I'm glad you stopped by!
DeleteI don't know what you are dreaming for............ your laundry room is awesome & I love your organizing. Where are your galvanized bins from (trash bags, etc)? Love them screwed to the wall and they are the perfect shape/size.
ReplyDeleteAw, thank you! :) Here is the exact link: http://www.buhiimports.com/cgi-bin/webstore.cgi?user_action=detail&catalogno=BY14-1
DeleteI usually order a bunch at one time because of shipping cost, but you can't beat the price @ $3.50. I did a post today on how to decoupage pails with fabric. These make good pails for teacher's gifts! http://simplicityinthesouth.blogspot.com/2012/09/tutorial-how-to-decoupage-galvanized.html
You have done an amazing job with your laundry room. It give me inspiration for mine. I have a link party on Wednesdays, and I would love it if you would link this and any other posts. It is called Wednesdays Adorned From Above Link Party. It runs from Wednesday to Sundays.

DeleteAre the baskets from ikea? They are very nice.
ReplyDeleteYes, they're from Ikea! The top row is from Sam's Club and the middle row baskets are from Dollar General. They just happen to match.
DeleteHello from another small space Mom.
ReplyDeleteGreat job! And yes I like to see what others are doing. :o)
I have 7 children and a husband a home that is almost the same size as yours. Let creativity abound.
Wow! I commend you! Not only for living in a house the same size with 9 people, but for also raising 7 children! That is awesome!
